In the mid '70s a sub-sect of the Orange People set up a wholefoods grocery store opposite Mario's in Brunswick Street, Fitzroy, with the idea of selling food as unprocessed and wholesome as possible.

A small café was set up out the back and it became so popular that they had to move to a much larger shop on Smith Street. Thus, Soul Food Café was born in 1981 and was one of the first vegetarian cafes in Melbourne. 25 years later it is still operating in the same building.
